This week in IB Chemistry, American School Dhahran students strengthened essential laboratory skills in preparation for the IB practical component of their course, scheduled for the start of the next academic year. Through a structured rotation of six hands-on workstations, students focused on building both technical precision and scientific confidence.

The activities emphasized core experimental concepts, including accuracy and precision in data collection, qualitative analysis using universal indicators and the determination of numerical pH values. Students also refined measurement techniques by accurately preparing a 250 mL solution using appropriate laboratory glassware.

Additional stations challenged students to apply conceptual understanding through practical problem-solving. Students constructed a copper–magnesium sulfate voltaic cell using a potassium nitrate salt bridge, reinforcing principles of electrochemistry. They also prepared a 1.0 molar standard solution using analytical balances and laboratory equipment, further developing quantitative skills required for IB assessment.

These laboratory experiences reflect ASD’s commitment to academic rigor and experiential learning. By combining theory with hands-on application, IB students are strengthening the analytical, investigative and critical-thinking skills essential for success in advanced scientific study.
