ASD’s Middle School Scientists Explore Light and Reflection Through Hands-On Investigation
SHARE
Middle school students at American School Dhahran engaged in a hands-on scientific investigation to deepen their understanding of how light interacts with different materials, reinforcing ASD’s commitment to academic excellence.
Students explored the unique behavior of a one-way mirror, a surface that acts as a mirror in bright light yet functions as a window in darkness. To uncover the science behind this phenomenon, they compared how light behaves when directed at a one-way mirror, regular glass and a standard mirror.
Using direct observations and a light meter, students measured the amount of light that passed through each material versus the amount that was reflected. Their data allowed them to analyze and explain the balance of transmission and reflection that gives a one-way mirror its distinctive properties.
This investigation strengthened students’ understanding of optics, light behavior and encouraged critical thinking and scientific reasoning. Experiences like this reflect ASD’s dedication to providing meaningful, hands-on learning that inspires curiosity and builds a strong academic foundation for all students.
