American School Dhahran’s middle school science program continues to encourage curiosity, collaboration and innovation through hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences. On Monday, Jan. 12, 2025, middle school students showcased their learning at the Semester 2 STEM Fair, highlighting weeks of research, experimentation and teamwork.

Students engaged in the full scientific process, from developing real-world inquiry questions and conducting background research to performing experiments, collecting and analyzing data and communicating their findings. Working collaboratively, they demonstrated strong scientific reasoning, problem-solving skills and growing confidence in presenting complex ideas.

Student projects explored a wide range of scientific concepts, including the effect of water salinity on density, the chemistry behind bath bombs, the engineering design of balloon-powered cars and whether the size of an airplane affects the distance it travels. Additional investigations examined memory retention and compared different sweeteners, showcasing students’ ability to connect scientific inquiry to real-world applications.

The STEM Fair served as a celebration of student achievement and provided the school community with an opportunity to witness students’ enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math. Families, faculty and staff joined in recognizing these accomplishments and cheering on the next generation of scientists as they proudly presented their projects.

ASD extends its sincere thanks to Ms. Tamara Sweedat for her support and guidance in making the STEM Fair a success. Through programs such as the Middle School STEM Fair, ASD remains committed to empowering students with the curiosity, skills and creativity needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world.
