Upper Elementary students at American School Dhahran recently completed an engaging English Language Arts unit titled Eureka: Student Inventor!, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the invention process while encouraging creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

Rather than studying historical inventions alone, students actively participated in each stage of innovation, including research, collaboration, knowledge-building and documentation. A key focus of the unit was the development of presentation skills and resilience, teaching students that setbacks are a natural and valuable part of problem-solving and growth.

The unit culminated in a high-energy “season finale” game show, where students applied their learning to real-world challenges. Each student identified a specific problem and engineered a prototype solution, demonstrating both ingenuity and practical application of their skills. Inventions ranged from tools to stabilize falling book bins and organizational solutions to creative devices designed to address boredom.

The project reflects ASD’s commitment to hands-on, experiential learning, where students develop problem-solving skills, creativity and confidence while applying classroom knowledge to meaningful challenges. By engaging students in the full lifecycle of invention, the Eureka unit highlights how ASD’s programs promote innovation
