ASD Students Lead Hands-On Neuroscience Workshop During WOW Week

American School Dhahran students deepened their understanding of brain health and neurological science during WOW Week through an educational workshop organized by the Medical Research Club.
The workshop featured Dr. Faisal Ikram, a physician and professor from Alfaisal University’s College of Medicine, who delivered an engaging lecture on brain function and the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Ikram introduced students to the science behind conditions that affect the nervous system over time, with a focus on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Following the lecture, Medical Research Club members led interactive learning stations, each dedicated to one of the four diseases. Students rotated through the stations and participated in hands-on activities designed to simulate symptoms and challenges associated with each condition. Activities included picking up coins while wearing mittens to represent Parkinson’s-related motor difficulties, memorizing dance sequences and word lists to reflect cognitive challenges linked to Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases and using chopsticks to grasp small objects to demonstrate the physical limitations associated with ALS.
To extend learning beyond the workshop, students also shared informational brochures and awareness ribbons, encouraging continued conversation and understanding throughout the school community.
The workshop aimed to introduce students to neurodegenerative diseases early, encouraging awareness, empathy and scientific curiosity. Through student leadership, expert insight and experiential learning, the event reflected ASD’s commitment to meaningful, interdisciplinary learning experiences that connect academic knowledge to real-world issues.
