Upper elementary students at ISG Jubail brought the concept of global trade to life during a hands-on learning activity called the Banana Smoothie Sale. The lively event, organized by Ms. Ann Kaufman, helped students explore how goods move across countries, the idea of imports and exports and what happens when resources are limited.

Teachers and staff joined the simulation by using banana bucks, a classroom currency, to “purchase” small stacks of paper representing smoothie ingredients. Each group of students took on a role in the trade process, and the classroom was divided into sections that mimicked real-world stations. Participants could visit areas marked “purchase here,” “pay here,” or “get coupons here,” which guided them through the steps of buying, selling and trading within the classroom economy.

As staff members moved from table to table, students explained how scarcity could affect availability and cost. The classroom buzzed with conversation as students connected what they were learning to global trade systems and real-world economics as they navigated their tasks.

The activity encouraged collaboration, problem-solving and communication. Teachers observed how students took ownership of their learning, asking thoughtful questions and applying what they knew in practical ways. By engaging with each other in this simulation, students learned that they can think critically, adapt to challenges and train their brains to approach complex ideas with confidence.

This creative classroom experience reflected ISG Jubail’s commitment to meaningful, community-based learning. The Banana Smoothie Sale left students with joy and a deeper understanding of how trade connects people and how curiosity can turn a simple classroom activity into an unforgettable lesson.
