The British School Dhahran’s Week Without Walls trip to Riyadh delivered a rich programme of experiential learning, carefully designed to deepen students’ understanding of sustainability, heritage, enterprise and personal development.

At the remarkable King Salman Oasis, students examined how urban green spaces contribute to environmental sustainability, biodiversity and community wellbeing within a rapidly expanding capital city. Their visit to The Boulevard provided insight into large-scale urban development, tourism strategy and the economic diversification goals aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, allowing students to observe how entertainment and cultural districts support national growth. Engagement at a local animal shelter encouraged reflection on ethical responsibility, animal welfare and active citizenship, reinforcing the importance of empathy and community service.

A highlight of the programme was the educational tour of Almarai, where students explored advanced agricultural technology, food production systems, supply chain management and rigorous quality assurance processes, gaining a practical understanding of sustainability and innovation within one of the Middle East’s leading food and beverage companies.

At Masmak Fort, students investigated the historical significance of the fort in the unification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, strengthening their appreciation of national heritage and cultural identity. The programme concluded with a structured camping experience in Riyadh, designed to develop resilience, leadership and collaboration through team-based challenges in an outdoor setting.

Collectively, these experiences extended learning beyond the classroom by fostering critical thinking, cultural awareness, environmental responsibility and essential life skills. Through direct engagement with industry, history, sustainability initiatives and community organisations, students developed confidence, independence and a broader global perspective that will support both their academic progress and their future aspirations.
