On September 29, 2025 the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) held its first campus assembly. The gathering brought together student leaders with administrators and staff to focus on one of the most important elements of school life: student voice. The session centered on feedback collection and analysis with a strong emphasis on how data can shape meaningful change in our schools.
The SSAC is composed of students across Grade 7-12. It represents a diverse group committed to strengthening collaboration and ensuring that student perspectives play an active role in school decision making. This aligns directly with ISG’s mission and core values of impact and integrity as well as respect and acceptance and responsibility.
At the start of the session SSAC members introduced themselves and spoke about the council’s purpose. Their role is to serve as a bridge between the student body and school leadership to ensure that every learner’s experience is considered in future planning. Students also reflected on how previous SSAC initiatives have already made a visible difference across ISG campuses through food service improvements and the development of enhanced student facilities.
A central part of the discussion explored school culture. Culture was defined as the collective practices and behaviors combined with attitudes and values that are shared by every member of the community. Students explored how culture is created not only by teachers and staff but also through the daily contributions of students, parents and the wider school community. By recognizing that every interaction contributes to culture, students gained a deeper understanding of their responsibility in fostering an environment rooted in respect and acceptance.
The heart of the session focused on the Student Pulse Survey which is ISG’s tool for gathering authentic feedback from learners. SSAC members guided their peers through activities designed to improve survey design. They encouraged participants to think critically about what questions matter most and how results can best be interpreted. Students also explored the full cycle of data use.
The first step is the collection of surveys that gather honest and anonymous feedback. The next step is regular SSAC meetings to analyze the data and create visuals for quantitative results while also identifying themes from qualitative responses. The findings are then communicated with principals and assistant principals as well as classroom teachers. Most importantly the information is shared back with students themselves.
From there SSAC proposes next steps to relevant stakeholders which ensures that student input informs planning for the next school year. An important reminder throughout the session was the need to handle sensitive data with care and confidentiality. This reinforced the council’s role as responsible stewards of student voice.
The assembly concluded with a recognition ceremony for SSAC members. Each student received a certificate along with a small gift. This symbolized the school’s appreciation for their leadership and their commitment to making an impact. The recognition highlighted that student advisory roles are not only about providing feedback. They are also about shaping the future of schools through service and responsibility and vision.
The September 29 presentation underscored how student voice is at the heart of ISG’s mission. By engaging in thoughtful dialogue on culture while refining survey tools and analyzing data responsibly, SSAC members are paving the way for continuous improvement in teaching and learning and community life. The event was a celebration of leadership and collaboration and the belief that every student has a role to play in building a stronger and more inclusive school environment.
