During BSD’s WOW Week, Key Stage 3 students participated in an engaging hands-on STEM challenge delivered by engineers from Fluor Corporation.
The session began with an informative presentation in which Fluor engineers from a range of engineering disciplines shared insights into their professional journeys and discussed the large-scale projects they contribute to around the world.
Students then took part in an interactive question-and-answer session, providing a valuable opportunity to explore the diverse career pathways within the engineering sector. Following the presentation, students were organised into teams of five and tasked with designing and building a device capable of launching a ping-pong ball through a small target hole positioned at a fixed distance. Using a limited selection of materials, teams collaborated to plan, construct and refine their prototypes while applying creative thinking and practical problem-solving skills.
Throughout the challenge, Fluor engineers worked closely with the students, offering guidance, encouraging iterative design improvements and introducing key engineering concepts such as precision, structural design and efficiency. The activity not only fostered teamwork, innovation and critical thinking but also provided students with an inspiring insight into real-world engineering and the exciting opportunities available within STEM fields.
