The ISG Teaching & Learning Office is pleased to report on the success of the Learning Support and Multilingual Learners Retreat, held on January 24, 2024. Dedicated educators from across the district gathered to tackle crucial topics and collaborate on improving the support system for our diverse learners.

The retreat focused on five key areas:

  1. Streamlining Data and Assessment: The group explored strategies for optimizing learning support registers and data tracking to ensure efficient and meaningful information capture. The discussion also centered on identifying suitable assessment tools applicable across American and British curriculums to provide uniform data for student progress evaluation.

  2. Refining Referral Processes: The group delved into the student referral process, analyzing data needs, collection methods and their impact on admissions. By streamlining this process, we aim to ensure timely and effective support for students who require additional assistance.

  3. Collaborative Support Plans: Emphasis was placed on the importance of clear and accessible support plans. The retreat offered insights into best practices for crafting effective plans and fostering shared ownership among educators, parents and students.

  4. Handbook Revision: The group embarked on a thorough review of the district's Learning and Language Support handbook, with a focus on aligning its content with the current student population and available resources. The discussions also yielded recommendations for incorporating appropriate intervention materials to support diverse learners.

  5. Fostering Collaboration: Throughout the retreat, the driving questions for each topic facilitated insightful discussions and led to actionable outcomes. The collaborative environment fostered a sense of shared responsibility for enhancing the support systems for all our students.

We are confident that the insights gained from this retreat will lead to tangible improvements in our approach to supporting students with diverse learning needs.

At ISG, we are committed to implementing the recommendations and continuing our collective efforts to ensure all students reach their full potential, and the Teaching & Learning Office will be providing further updates on the specific action plans and timelines for implementing the retreat's outcomes in the coming weeks.
