Inside Our Classroom: Understanding Informational Text

On December 10th, our Middle School Science and English classes engaged in a collaborative effort to enhance students’ skills in reading and comprehending informational texts.

Under the guidance of Ms. Fiza Shaikh, English students, well-versed in the nuances of informational text comprehension, teamed up with their counterparts from Ms. Sindhu John’s Science classes. The objective was for English students to impart their knowledge and strategies to enhance comprehension to their science peers.

Working in small groups of 2-3, students applied various strategies such as self-monitoring for comprehension, retelling, questioning and visualizing events in the text. This collaborative initiative not only facilitated cross-disciplinary learning but also provided a unique opportunity for students to reflect on their own learning experiences. Engaging in the challenging practice of teaching the skills they’ve acquired, students further solidified their understanding of reading and comprehension strategies.
