On April 27, the ISG Dammam auditorium came alive as our Grade 6 students launched the highly anticipated One Ocean Project—a student-led initiative proudly organized by the Middle School Eco Club and Compassion Club. This powerful event marked the beginning of a multi-week journey in which students across Grades 6 to 8 would lead presentations aimed at raising awareness about ocean conservation, climate change, and sustainability. Aligned with the global KBR One Ocean Initiative, the project challenged students to dive deep into the environmental issues facing our oceans and to creatively share their research, solutions and insights with their peers.
The launch began with Grade 6.1 and 6.2, who opened the program with their presentation titled “Why the Ocean Matters.” These students explored the vital role oceans play in our planet’s survival—from regulating climate and providing oxygen to supporting marine biodiversity and global economies. Their message set the tone for the event: understanding why we must care is the first step toward protecting our oceans. Grade 6.3 followed with an engaging and informative presentation on the Seven Ocean Literacy Principles. By highlighting the scientific principles that govern ocean systems and our interaction with them, the students helped their peers think like marine scientists and better understand the depth and complexity of our relationship with the ocean.
Next, Grade 6.4 and 6.5 delivered a compelling segment titled “Ocean in Danger,” addressing real-world threats such as plastic pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction and rising ocean temperatures. Their presentation was not only educational but also deeply emotional, as they urged the audience to take action and be part of the solution. With passion and purpose, these young changemakers reminded us all that protecting the ocean is not a future goal—it is a present responsibility.
The One Ocean Project will continue over several weeks, with each middle school advisory class presenting on a different topic, including upstream and downstream solutions, the ocean-climate connection, the impacts of plastic pollution, biomimicry, data visualization, and ecosystem restoration. Each group is given creative freedom to choose their format—ranging from skits, games and debates to posters, experiments and storytelling—making the experience both educational and highly engaging for the entire school community.
More than just a showcase of environmental knowledge, the One Ocean Project is a platform for developing essential 21st-century skills. Through their preparation and presentations, students are building collaboration, research, communication, and critical thinking abilities—all while deepening their understanding of global environmental challenges. With guidance from teachers and curated learning resources, each class has demonstrated not only knowledge of the issues but also the creativity and leadership to inspire meaningful change.
As the project continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the One Ocean Project is more than an assembly—it is a movement. It reflects our students' growing commitment to sustainability and their power to become advocates for our planet. Thanks to their voices, our community is more informed, more inspired and more determined to protect the blue heart of our world.
