What happens when a group of writers receives ten random words, an unexpected setting and a specific mood to capture? For students in Ms. Sadaf Ahmed’s English Language Arts class at ISG Dammam, the answer was a creative writing challenge that encouraged them to think outside the box and learn from one another.

Through a competition titled Mission Im-PLOT-sible: Can Your Team Turn Creative Chaos into Storytelling Magic? students worked in four teams to develop original short stories using a set of mystery prompts. Each team had to incorporate ten assigned words into its story while following additional instructions, such as building a particular mood, describing a setting or adding a plot twist or a slow-down scene.

With possibilities ranging from a comedy set in a cafeteria to a horror story unfolding in a dentist’s office, students had to find ways to bring seemingly unrelated ideas together into a coherent narrative. The challenge encouraged them to experiment with storytelling techniques and approach familiar writing tasks from new perspectives.

However, creating a successful story involved more than putting words on a page. Team members had to listen to one another, exchange ideas and make decisions together. By considering different viewpoints and finding ways to incorporate their peers’ suggestions, students learned how collaboration could strengthen their writing and give their stories greater depth.

The learning continued as teams exchanged stories and offered feedback to one another. Students were encouraged to provide specific, practical suggestions that their classmates could use to revise and improve their work. They also had the opportunity to consider feedback on their own writing and decide how to apply it effectively.

Through this process, students explored both sides of constructive feedback: how to communicate suggestions thoughtfully and how to receive different perspectives with an open mind. These skills are valuable beyond the classroom, helping students build confidence in sharing their ideas, responding to others and working toward a shared goal.

Under Ms. Sadaf’s guidance, the activity created space for students to take creative risks, learn from their peers and recognize how different ideas can contribute to a stronger final piece. As they developed and refined their stories, they experienced writing as a collaborative process in which listening, thoughtful discussion and a willingness to revise were just as important as imagination.

At ISG Dammam, activities like this give students the opportunity to grow as writers while learning from the people around them, building skills they can carry into future classroom projects and beyond.
