ASD’s Middle School Students Embark on Life-Changing Service Trip to Malaysia

The incredible experiences of 20 American School Dhahran middle school students, who recently returned from a 10-day trip to Malaysia, were centered around community service. During the trip, the students engaged in meaningful environmental projects that made a lasting impact.

During their journey, the students took part in several conservation efforts, including:

  • Collecting 20kg of trash on a beach in Pangkor, an important site where sea turtles lay their eggs.
  • Planting 52 Sea Lettuce (Ambong ambong) plants in Pangkor to support local ecosystems.
  • Preparing 70 Sea Lettuce seedlings in the nursery to ensure the continued growth of this vital plant.
  • Planting 230 mangrove trees in Lumut, helping to protect coastal areas from erosion.
  • Planting 60 trees in Merapoh and preparing 100 seedlings to further support reforestation efforts.

In addition to their environmental work, the students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture. They learned essential survival skills from a local tribe, including how to make fire, build shelters, use blow darts, and cook food over an open fire.

As part of their cultural exchange, they also participated in a Batik painting workshop, where each student created their own unique piece of art.

This trip was a chance for our students to learn, grow, and connect with different cultures. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and the positive impact they made in Malaysia.
