Empowering Journeys: ISG Jubail Student Service Trip to Barcelona

In a quest to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of Catalonian culture and history, middle school and high schools students from ISG Jubail embarked on an enriching journey to Barcelona, Spain, as part of their Week Without Walls program. Students delved into the heart of Barcelona, experiencing its vibrant past and present while engaging in meaningful activities aimed at fostering cultural immersion and sustainable development.

The itinerary was meticulously crafted to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Barcelona's past and present. They began their exploration with guided tours of iconic landmarks such as the Ramblas, the Gothic neighborhood, and Plaça Catalunya, gaining insight into the city's diverse charms and challenges.

Central to the experience was the Food and Culture Immersion component, where students indulged in international cuisine at a local restaurant, enhancing their appreciation for Catalonian gastronomy.
In a two-hour challenge, students formed teams to capture the essence of Barcelona through photos, interviews, and culinary experiences, immersing themselves in the local culture and traditions.

A visit to the Museu Picasso offered students a glimpse into the life and works of the renowned artist, Pablo Picasso, enriching their understanding of twentieth-century Spanish art.

Participation in sustainable development initiatives was a key aspect of the trip. In teams of 3-5, students embarked on a collaborative challenge focused on Sustainable Design. Their task was to investigate and plan a project aimed at furthering the regeneration process in an area of Barcelona in need of renovation. This three-part challenge began with students interviewing members of the community to understand their needs. Following this, students analyzed the gathered information and designed a public space tailored to address these needs effectively. Finally, they presented their project to the group, showcasing their innovative ideas and solutions for sustainable urban development in Barcelona.

One of the highlights of the itinerary was a cooking class, where students learned to prepare traditional Spanish dishes such as Paella and Tapas, further deepening their cultural immersion.
Reflective sessions guided by CAS Trip Leaders provided students with the opportunity to review their experiences and personal growth throughout the journey.

Visits to architectural marvels like the Sagrada Familia cathedral, designed by Antoni Gaudí, and engaging in creative workshops added to the enriching experience.

From culinary experiences to sustainable design projects, the Week Without Walls program provided students with a holistic understanding of Barcelona's culture, history and future aspirations. Armed with newfound knowledge and inspiration, students returned home ready to make a positive impact on their own communities, embodying the spirit of global citizenship and cultural appreciation fostered by the Week Without Walls program.
